How-tos
Chat with an engineer in Slack
- In a channel: invite the YourEngineers app to the channel, then mention it with the
engineer's name and a colon:
@YourEngineers ada: why is the login test flaky? The name prefix must come early (within the first 40 characters). With only one engineer on the team, no name is needed. With several and no name, you're asked who it's for. - Threads: the reply comes in a thread. Every follow-up in that thread goes to the same
engineer, even without a name. In channels the app only hears messages that mention it, so
mention
@YourEngineersin thread replies too. - DMs: send the YourEngineers app a direct message. No mention is needed; use
name:to pick the engineer as above. - Repos: add
repo: owner/name(optionally@branch, or a URL; several withrepo: a, b) to the first message of a thread. If you don't, and the request clearly needs code and you have several repos, you're shown a repo picker (choose, then Start or No repo needed, or replyrepo: …). helpshows your team and how to address them.- Catching up: engineers can read the channels the app has been invited to (public or private) and their threads, e.g. "summarise what #eng decided this week". They can't read DMs, and can't read a channel the app isn't in.
- Only workspace members are served. Others are asked to have a teammate bring the engineer in.
- If Slack can't confirm who someone is at that moment (Slack didn't answer), they're asked to try again in a minute rather than served.
